New Network Optimized for High-Speed Mobile Internet

SAN JOSE, California, March 26, 2015 - Cisco announced today that Telefonica, one of the largest providers of communications services in Latin America, has deployed the Cisco ASR 9000 (aggregation router), ASR 901 and ASR 903, as part of its Evolved Programmable Network (EPN) to deliver enhanced high-speed mobile backhaul services. The Cisco ASR 901 and ASR 903 will provide cell-site backhaul services and better enable mobile operators to support data-intensive services required by consumers and businesses.

Cisco's technology, services and experience in helping network operators scale services to meet the demands of mobile customers were significant reasons Telefonica chose it for this deployment. According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI), by 2018 there will be more than 10 billion mobile-ready devices and connections, about 3 billion more than there were in 2013, and the global mobile Internet data traffic will increase 18-fold over the next five years. Mobile operators require robust cell-site backhaul services to accommodate this growth in mobile traffic and facilitate delivery of new mobile services, applications and experiences.

Cisco has the most comprehensive mobile backhaul solution in the industry, including cell site routers, self-optimizing technology for both licensed and unlicensed spectrum (small cell and macro cell), and small cells, including Wi-Fi.

The Cisco ASR 9000 series routers will help Telefonica address growth through a converged infrastructure that optimizes service delivery with flexibility, robust IPv6 support, and Carrier Ethernet capabilities.

The platform's use of the Cisco IOS XR modular software operating system will simplify the company's network operations and enable seamless system redundancy and network resiliency.

LATAM continues to be a growth engine for Telefonica. Telefonica deployed ASR 9000 and ASR 903 in Brazil, and ASR 9000 in Argentina and Chile to provide metro and backhaul services. In addition, Telefonica has chosen Cisco to deploy the ASR9000, ASR 901 and ASR 903 to support LTE backhaul services in Mexico. Telefonica was also the first mobile operator to deploy 4G networks in Colombia.

Highlights/Key Facts

  • The Cisco ASR 9000 Series is specifically designed to give network operators flexibility to offer new services by providing a strong foundation for services such as 4G mobile Internet, business-class Ethernet, and residential video and broadband.
  • With industry-leading 100GE capacity, and network programmability via NETCONF/YANG, the ASR 9000 ensures that Telefonica has the scale and flexibility for future requirements.
  • Mobile backhaul represents one of the fastest-growing services for Telefonica. This capability will be rolled out extensively in the markets across Latin America over the next few months.
  • In addition to 4G mobile backhaul, the new Carrier Ethernet network will enable additional broadband capacity as it continues to deliver faster broadband speeds in recently acquired markets.
  • The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast, 2014-2018, global Internet traffic will reach an annual run rate of 1.6 zettabyes.
